The Hospital Welfare and Muslim Educational Movement(HWMEM) supervises the Halaal kitchens at 18 major hospitals. We are pleased to inform the public that negotiations with administration authorities to provide Halaal facilities at the Helderberg Hospital in Somerset West have been successfully concluded. The conversion of the kitchen to meet Halaal criteria will be performed in the near future. A public announcement will be made once the halaal facilities become available.








Imam B. Saban, ably assisted by Hanief Sonday and members of our Ladies Division, visit the Hospitals regularly to ensure that the Halaal dietary and hygiene requirements are met.
Complaints are lodged immediately and pursued vigorously by the task team until they have been resolved satisfactorily. Problems tackled by the task team during the year were related to malfunctioning equipment, a neglect of the cleanliness of kitchen and surrounding area and dietary requirements.

When the Movement was founded during World War 2 in 1942 it only monitored the kitchen facilities at Somerset Hospital. Since then the Movement gradually expanded these services to to other hospitals and now supervises the Halaal kitchens at all the major state and private hospitals.
